A Night of Preparation and Unity *

Frederiksted, St. Croix — The night before Emancipation Day was filled with music, anticipation, and pride. On July 2, the community gathered to honor the spirit of freedom and the strength of those who marched for it in 1848.

I was honored to take part in this celebration by creating crochet murals that symbolized unity and resilience. Each stitch reflected the courage of those who prepared for freedom that same night centuries ago — led by General Buddhoe and countless unnamed heroes.

Surrounded by art, rhythm, and togetherness, the evening reminded me how creativity continues to connect us to our past and inspire hope for the future.

“Every stitch tells a story — of freedom once fought for, and freedom still cherished today.”

Stitched Stories: Honoring 1848 Through Crochet Art

  • Threads of Freedom

Captured in Frederiksted on the eve of Emancipation Day, this photo shows me beside my crochet mural — a colorful mermaid flowing through the sea, symbolizing freedom, resilience, and the creative spirit of the Virgin Islands. Created for the July 2 “Night of Preparation” event, the piece reflects how art and history intertwine to celebrate unity and cultural pride.

  • Waves of Unity

Seen from another angle, this photo highlights the intricate textures and movement of the crochet mural — a mermaid gracefully swimming across blue waters, her colorful hair flowing like waves of freedom. Displayed during the July 2 “Night of Preparation” in Frederiksted, the artwork celebrates unity, creativity, and the enduring legacy of emancipation through handmade art.

  • 1848: The Year of Freedom

Displayed in front of a historic Frederiksted building, this crochet mural boldly features the numbers 1848, honoring the year of Emancipation in the Virgin Islands. Stitched in the powerful colors of red, yellow, and green against a black background, the piece stands as a handmade tribute to freedom, unity, and cultural pride during the July 2 “Night of Preparation” celebration.
